Meal programs
Meal programs help meet older adults’ and individuals with disabilities’ nutritional needs if they find it hard to prepare meals on their own.
What are meal programs?
Meal programs deliver meals to an individual’s home, or the person goes to a location where meals are served to a group. Registered dietitians plan or review the menus. Other settings include churches, community centers and civic organizations.
Many for-profit businesses offer food delivery services for older adults and individuals with disabilities. For instance, restaurants, private meal services and grocery stores often deliver for little or no cost other than for the food itself.
What should I look for in a meal program?
Find out if the program can provide meals when and where you need them. Make sure the program can deal with any special dietary needs. Check if the program can provide liquid or chopped meals, if needed.
How do I pay for a meal program?
Most meal programs are low-priced or free. Most are available to people of any income level. Some ask for a suggested donation. Federal, state or local agencies often help pay for these programs. Religious organizations or community groups sponsor some programs.
